Pretty Bay is a sandy beach located in the small but flourishing seaside resort of Birzebbugia, close to Marsaxlokk in south-east Malta.
It has been a popular bathing spot for Maltese holidaymakers for many years, although decades ago there was no sand and bathers used to take to the water from the flat rocks that lined the shore, or from specially built platforms.
In more recent years, sand was recovered from the sea and brought to the shoreline to build the sandy beach that exists today.
Pretty Bay forms part of Marsaxlokk Bay and lies at the centre of Birzebbugia, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants for visitors to explore. Just outside of the bay, towards St George's Bay, there is a rocky shore popular with sunbathers and snorkellers.
Although views here are slightly restricted by the Malta Freeport and its cranes and ships, the sheltered waters and soft gold sand at this beach make it an excellent place to spend the day in the blazing Mediterranean sun.
The sea is extremely clear and ideal for swimming. Facilities include water sports, kiosks and bars, and nearby there is a bus terminal and taxi rank. Just off the beach there is a small park with a beautiful promenade surrounded by benched seating.
