Mellieha

Mellieha, Malta
Mellieha, on Malta's northern coast, is an attractive town which boasts one of the island's largest and most popular beaches. Famed for its historical heritage, Mellieha has long been a favourite amongst the Maltese and its charms are becoming increasingly popular for visitors to the island.
While the resort is relatively large it is also somewhat low key, especially in comparison to the summer party capital of Bugibba further along the coast, and therefore remains fairly quite outside in the peak season of July and August.
The safe, sandy strip of beach that is Mellieha Bay proves a real draw for those wishing to soak up the sun, frequently appearing in lists of the islands top ten beaches - no mean feat when you consider how many beaches and bays there are surrounding Malta and Gozo.
The shallow waters, plenty of sand and excellent amenities make it the ideal place for families with young children. Another bonus is that the beach is very easy to reach by car or bus, although this does mean that the beach is backed by a main road.
The town itself overlooks the sweep of Mellieha bay from its hilltop position and is dominated by its fabulous Baroque church. The rest of the town's architecture mainly dates from the nineteenth century when the steep main street was constructed.
Although the town was once deserted back in the sixteenth century - a result of its attraction to Turkish pirates - it is now a bustling hub with a wide variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
However, the pinnacle if the town's historical heritage has to be the ancient Marian Grotto. A place of worship for centuries the Grotto houses a fresco of the Virgin Mary rumoured to have been painted by St Luke and its spring waters have been credited with healing properties.
