Gnejna Bay

Pronounced "j-nay na", this bay is situated to the north-west of Malta and is approached through the village of Mgarr.
This beach is a little smaller than Golden Bay, made up of an area of sand and shingle, with a short stretch of smooth white rock at one end. Although facilities are rudimentary (mobile kiosks selling cold drinks and packet snacks) the bay is beautiful and in one of the most serene parts of the Maltese islands, with its striking clay slopes and limestone cliffs.
There is also some opportunity for water sports. For those who enjoy cycling, it is worth considering a ride here from Mgarr as the journey is picturesque.
Gnejna's sandy beach, combined with its shallow waters, makes it a family-friendly location. It is far less busy than some of the other more popular beaches on Malta, mainly attracting local bathers.
The beach is cleaned every day and is not on the main tourist trail so more towel space is guaranteed. The beach is also the site of a solar observatory, megaliths and spectacular views of the large rock formation to the west.
Although technically nudism is banned in Malta, people often turn a blind eye and some parts of Gnejna are well known nudist spots.
The bay is also known as a centre for artisanal fishing using traditional techniques such as attracting fish with lamps at night.
