Also known as Mellieha Bay, this is without doubt the most popular of the Maltese beaches, not least because it is one of the few sandy beaches on the island and also one of the longest.
Located in the north of Malta, 2km from the inland village of Mellieha, it is extremely popular with families who tend to set up camp for the whole day. The beach is easily accessible via steps and a ramp down to the sand, and the waters remain shallow for about 50 metres out to sea.
Lining the coast are plenty of snack bars, kiosks and cafés, plus sun beds and umbrellas for hire, to keep you cool and refreshed under the Maltese sun. If you prefer to bring your own equipment, there is plenty of space to do so.
There is a wide variety of water sports available, including windsurfing, kite surfing, canoeing, water-skiing and some of the best scuba-diving in the Mediterranean. You can even hire a pedalo, try parasailing, or swim out to a large floating play area for some aquatic fun in the sun.
Although often very busy in summer, this beach is clean, child-friendly and great fun for everyone. The attractive location regularly provides the setting for beach parties and other events - and during off-peak season becomes even more beautiful due to the lack of crowds.
Mellieha Bay is easily accessible by car. Alternatively, you can catch a bus on lines 44 and 45 from Valletta, or line 48 from the Bugibba terminus.
