Malta Lights Up the Sky in Bilbao

A firework display lasting 20 minutes lit up the Spanish skies on Friday night, organised by the Għaxaq St Joseph fireworks factory.
The team competed with other groups from Australia, Tenerife, Austria and Valencia in a nine day international festival.
The planning for the 20 minute fireworks display began two months ago in June to ensure that the ground, mortars and coloured pyrotechnics were prepared correctly. The fireworks were transported from Malta, to Sicily to Spain by ferry, which Mr Caruana admitted was not the easiest process in terms of preparations and logistics. The team spent three days before the spectacular frantically preparing the firing mechanism. "Sometimes it felt like we were never going to make it but here we are and all is well," he commented.
The Maltese team faced tough competition, in particular, Foti International Fireworks, the Australian factory that is world famous for its amazing displays on the Sydney Harbour Bridge every New Year's Eve.
"Obviously, it was a great show but I feel the Tenerife team was the best so far," disclosed Mr Caruana, whilst still showing optimism for the Maltese display, "the jury actually came to the factory to see how we did the ground fireworks, which is something they don't usually do".
The group was determined to represent Malta in the best light possible, saying "at the end of the day, we are not here just representing the Għaxaq factory but we fly the Maltese flag".
