A new and extensive plan is being launched today in support of Malta's diving industry.
Minister of tourism and culture - Mario de Marco - said that the idea of this new plan was to give strategic direction to the Malta Tourism Authority, the government and the private sector.
Mr Marco continued: "The strategy is to promote sustainable tourism. We're not saying tourism at all costs, but rather tourism which respects the environment,"
The plan is based on the evidence that a huge number of tourists regularly visit Malta specifically for diving and there is also a large number of diving schools on the island which should be promoted more.
"Malta is indicated as the third best diving destination in the popular UK diver magazine - after Egypt and the Maldives and on many websites Malta and Gozo have made it into the top ten lists," revealed Mr Marco.
The clean waters, year-round warm sea temperatures and minimal travelling time between accommodation and diving sites are just some of the many reasons divers favour Malta.
