Currency in Malta
As from the 1st of January 2008 the currency of Malta has been the euro.
The banks in Malta usually open until early afternoon from Monday to Friday and up until midday on Saturdays. Individual branches may open for longer and summer and winter opening hours may vary.
There are exchange bureaus and cash machines all over the island where international bank cards and foreign currency are accepted. There is also a 24 hour exchange bureaux at Malta International Airport.
Many of the larger hotels, shops and restaurants will accept payment in the main foreign currencies although some charges may be incurred.
In compliance with EU legislation, in is necessary to complete the appropriate documentation when any person enters or leaves Malta with amounts of cash in excess of €10,000. These declaration forms are available from Customs.
