Formed by a long narrow bay between Comino and its tiny sister island Cominotto the Blue Lagoon is a gorgeous bay of the most brilliant turquoise water.
It is, without doubt, one of Malta's most celebrated areas of natural beauty and proves to be an extremely popular trip during the summer months. It is not hard to see why.
The floor of the lagoon is pure, white sand which, along with the stunning, crystal clear water, gives the impression of a huge, natural swimming pool. Families with children can spend hours paddling in the shallower parts of the bay and watch the shoals of tiny fish darting in and out of the rocks.
Confident swimmers looking for a little adventure might enjoy the swim over to Cominotto where you can swim through a tunnel in the rocks into a deep cobalt bay. The snorkelling and diving opportunities are fabulous in this area as the clarity of the water makes for excellent visibility.
The lagoon is surrounded by dramatic rock formations with lots of pathways for anybody who fancies exploring the island in between swimming and sunbathing. The dazzling scenery and cool refreshing water prove such an attraction in the hot, humid summer months that the Blue Lagoon can get overwhelmed with sightseers arriving on one of the many boat trips from Malta and Gozo.
It is best to arrive early in the morning, or else stay over for the evening, to appreciate the tranquil splendour of the lagoon in peace. Spring is a particularly lovely time to come as the island blooms with wild flowers and the scent of cumin, from which the island takes its name, hangs in the warm air.
There is a single hotel on the island which provides refreshments and snacks.
