The enchanting island of Sicily is just sixty miles off the coast of Malta and is home to Europe's most active volcano, ancient cities, stunning coastline and rolling countryside.
It is no surprise, then, that the day excursion to Sicily is so popular. The high-speed catamaran takes just ninety minutes coast to coast, then a fully air-conditioned luxury coach whisks you off to see this lovely island.
Leaving early in the morning this is a full day's sightseeing with plenty of impressive scenery en-route. The first stop is the typical Sicilian fishing village of Pozzallo with its imposing Cabrera Tower, built as a defence against frequent attacks from pirates.
From here the coach travels north to visit the Iblei Mountain Range passing villages nestled into the canyons as it passes. Here there is usually a chance to stop for refreshments and opportunities to take photographs of the stunning views.
The next highlight of the trip is the drive up Mount Etna, the largest and most active volcano in Europe, to the Sylvester Craters. The climb takes the coach through picturesque villages and constantly changing landscape.
The scenery changes from the fertile lower slopes of the volcano where orange and lemon groves grow alongside the vines known for producing the best wine in Sicily, past forests of chestnut trees to the pine forests on the higher levels.
At the Sylvester Craters there is time for lunch and souvenir shopping before hopping back on the coach for the final destination. Depending on what time of year you take the trip you will either go to Taormina (April - October) or Modica (January- March and November - December).
Taormina was made popular by British aristocrats in the mid 1800's and has since become Sicily's main tourist resort. Modica are an ancient city with fine Baroque architecture.
