The capital of this miniature island, Rabat, or Victoria as it is also known, perches high on a hilltop overlooking the whole of Gozo.
At both the physical and spiritual heart of Gozo the city is crowned by the walled Citadel which, by design, dominates the island's skyline. From its elevated position the Citadel offers breathtaking views over this verdant and romantic island.
The Citadel's roots go back to Roman times and the walled city that stands today has been there for centuries. For many years the island was plagued by raiding corsairs and Saracens who took its inhabitants into slavery.
For their own protection the Gozitans were ordered to spend every evening behind the city's fortifications. Now the Citadel is virtually uninhabited during the evening and its haunting beauty can be enjoyed in relative tranquillity.
By day the city is a centre of activity. Rabat has a thriving cultural life and its bustling market and shops have a relaxed, sociable atmosphere which seems to have seeped through the impenetrable walls of the Citadel.
Entering through the ancient city gates into a piazza with broad steps you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. There is, however, a constant flow of sightseers who come to admire the beautiful cathedral, a lavish example of Baroque architecture, the shops selling fine local crafts and the many museums including the Museum of Archaeology, the Natural Science Museum and the Cathedral Museum.
A walk around the city's ramparts offers fabulous views giving visitors a glimpse of Gozo's ancient past.
